Rain, Wind, Soil, and Sun

Here in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, our hazel trees can stretch out their roots to pull in nutrients from the rich volcanic soil and grow strong thanks to balanced rainfall and sunshine.

  • Nearly 50% of our orchards are entirely irrigated by rainfall. When additional water is needed, many farmers use efficient drip irrigation systems which conserve water and deliver it more directly to a tree’s roots.
  • Hazels are monoecious—a single tree has both female and male flowers—and are pollinated completely by the wind. Thanks to this, we don’t participate in the environmentally damaging commercial transportation of bees that many other crops require. To support local bee communities, we intersperse other pollenizer plants within our orchards.
  • Hazelnuts capture a significant amount of CO2, returning oxygen to the air while sequestering the carbon and enriching the soil. As a perennial crop, this carbon stays locked away much longer than annual crops, which return carbon to the air after harvest.
  • Our farmers work with agronomists to exercise Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), a set of guidelines for safe, abundant, and sustainable food production.
